Evaluation of the biological potential of crude extracts of Brazilian medicinal plants in a social context and for safe use in human health.
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Herbal medicines are the primary healthcare source for many in developing countries, which justifies the need for their validation through scientific studies to confirm their efficacy and safety. AIM: This study aimed to identify the most commonly used plants for treating gastrointestinal problems in a Brazilian city, Franca/SP. The study sought to identify the most commonly used plants and evaluated five selected extracts for antimicrobial, antioxidant, and gastroprotective potential, as well as their safe use for human health. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five plants
PubMed: 41308709Heteropterys aphrodisiaca infusion reduces the collateral effects of cyclosporine A on the testis.
Cyclosporine A (CsA) is known to have testicular toxicity, leading to male infertility. Stimulant and aphrodisiac properties have been attributed to the plant, Heteropterys aphrodisiaca. Thus, the present work was undertaken to evaluate the association of the drug and the medicinal herb in Wistar rats, applying testicular morphometry and ultrastructure. Twenty-four rats were used, divided into four groups: I, control; II, CsA; III, simultaneous use of CsA and H. aphrodisiaca; IV, H.
PubMed: 18449893Effect of Heteropterys aphrodisiaca on Anxiety and Male Exposure of Female Mice with Advanced Age.
BACKGROUND: Effect of Heteropterys aphrodisiaca (dog-node) on anxiety and function of adult female wistar mice. The project is an experiment with the use of H. aphrodisiac root extract, in order to observe the frequency of sexual exposure of females exposed to the extract, quantify the effect of the extract on the concentration of total testosterone and observe the anxiety levels of the animals exposed. Results will be measured with the laboratory testosterone test and LCE and CA tests. METHODS: In preparation of the extract, the root was oven dried at 40°C and diluted in alcohol extract (100g
PubMed: 28637417Heteropterys aphrodisiaca (extract BST0298): a Brazilian plant that improves memory in aged rats.
Literature report is lacking on pharmacological studies of the plant Heteropterys aphrodisiaca, endemic to the scrublands of Brazil. The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of oral dosing with extract BST0298 from this plant, on learning and on memory, in young (3-6-month-old) and aged (20-28-month-old) rats. The aged animals presented significant memory deficits in both the passive avoidance and T-maze left/right discrimination tests. Treatment for 7 days (50 mg/kg) or 26 days (100 mg/kg) with extract BST0298 restored the memory deficits in the passive avoidance test. How
PubMed: 11849833More resistant tendons obtained from the association of Heteropterys aphrodisiaca and endurance training.
BACKGROUND: Popular Brazilian medicine uses Heteropterys aphrodisiaca infusion as a tonic or stimulant, for the treatment of nervous debility and breakdown and for muscle and bone weakness. This study investigated the effects of Heteropterys aphrodisiaca infusion on the tendon properties and extracellular matrix of rats under endurance training. METHODS: Wistar rats were grouped as follows: CS- control sedentary, HS- H. aphrodisiaca sedentary, CT-control trained, HT- H. aphrodisiaca trained.
PubMed: 21711561Seguridad y Precauciones
