Maytenus heterophylla and Maytenus senegalensis, two traditional herbal medicines.

Maytenus heterophylla (Eckl. and Zeyh.) N.K.B. Robson and Maytenus senegalensis (Lam.) Exell are two African shrubs or trees that go under the common name of spike thorn, which belong to the Celastraceae family. Different plant parts of this species are largely used in traditional medicine for infectious and inflammatory diseases treatment. Several studies have been reported for both these species, but there are no recent review articles focusing microscopic, phytochemistry and pharmacological studies.

Seguridad y Precauciones

Seguridad y Precauciones de Uso: Maitén (Maytenus boaria) Debido a la complejidad de sus metabolitos secundarios, como los sesquiterpenos de tipo dihydro-β-agarofuran identificados en sus estructuras [PMID 28579566, PMID 29726465], el uso de preparados derivados del Maitén debe realizarse con extrema precaución y bajo supervisión profesional. A continuación, se detallan las advertencias de seguridad fundamentales para el manejo de esta especie. En lo que respecta al embarazo y la lactancia, no existe evidencia científica suficiente que garantice la inocuidad de los compuestos bioactivos del Maitén en mujeres gestantes o en periodo de lactancia. Debido a la falta de estudios clínicos sobre la teratogenicidad de sus componentes, se recomienda evitar su consumo durante estas etapas críticas del desarrollo, ya que el riesgo de efectos adversos sobre el feto o el lactante es desconocido. De igual manera, su uso en niños pequeños debe ser evitado, dada la ausencia de protocolos de dosificación segura y la vulnerabilidad de los sistemas fisiológicos en desarrollo ante compuestos químicos complejos. En cuanto a los efectos secundarios conocidos, el uso de extractos concentrados podría provocar reacciones adversas gastrointestinales o dermatológicas en personas sensibles.
