Antimicrobial Activities of Satureja khuzestanica Jamzad; A Review.

Satureja khuzestanica Jamzad is a species native to Iran and is highly important in Southwestern regions. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and grows in different climates. A number of pharmacological properties such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-thyroid, antioxidant, and diuretic have been attributed to this plant. In recent years, a wide range of biological properties, extract, and essential oil of Satureja khuzestanica has been studied by researchers. Many essential oils (EOs) are screened as potential sources of antimicrobial compounds. EOs from the genus Satureja have recognized biological properties, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anticancer, and antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to obtain a metabolite profile of commercial essential oil of S. montana L. (SEO) and to evaluate its antimicrobial properties, both alone and combined with gentamicin towards Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains.

Seguridad y Precauciones

SEGURIDAD Y PRECAUCIONES DEL QUIMSA CUCHU (Satureja boliviana) El uso de la *Satureja boliviana*, conocida comúnmente como Quimsa cuchu, debe realizarse con extrema precaución debido a la presencia de aceites esenciales potentes y compuestos bioactivos que pueden tener efectos sistémicos significativos. Aunque la investigación científica ha destacado su actividad antiviral [PMID 10323492] y la complejidad de sus componentes químicos [PMID 39570157], su manejo terapéutico requiere un conocimiento profundo de sus riesgos potenciales. En cuanto al embarazo y la lactancia, el consumo de esta planta está estrictamente contraindicado. La presencia de compuestos fenólicos y aceites volátiles, como el carvacrol, podría tener efectos emenagogos, lo cual representa un riesgo de estimulación uterina que podría comprometer la viabilidad del embarazo. Debido a la falta de estudios clínicos exhaustivos sobre la seguridad fetal, no se recomienda su uso en mujeres gestantes ni en mujeres que se encuentran en periodo de lactancia, para evitar la transferencia de compuestos bioactivos al lactante a través de la leche materna. Respecto a la población pediátrica, el uso de Quimsa cuchu debe evitarse en niños, ya que sus sistemas metabólicos son más sensibles a los aceites esenciales concentrados.
