Phytochemistry, bioactivities and application of Gynostemma pentaphyllum polysaccharide: A review.
Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino (GP) (Cucurbitaceae), commonly considered as a folk remedy, has a long history of use in many parts of Asia. Polysaccharides are one of the main components of GP and possess antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and cardioprotective properties. In recent decades, Gynostemma pentaphyllum polysaccharides (GPP) have been widely studied for their various health benefits and potential economic value. However, there are relatively few reviews documenting these GPP. Therefore, this paper reviews the research progress of GPP in terms of th

Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino has a long history as food and diary supplement in China. At present, there are some products for hyperlipidemia in the market, including G. pentaphyllum tea, healthy wine and healthy food. In order to discover proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, fourteen new triterpenoid saponins named gypenoside LXXXVIII-CI (1-14) along with six known compounds (15-20) were isolated from G. pentaphyllum.

BACKGROUND: In traditional Asian medicine, Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino leaf extract (Gp) is used to treat aging, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Hair loss and hair-graying are common phenomena that haunt everyone. However, whether Gp activities on inhibition of hair loss and getting gray have been rarely studied. AIM: Study the Gp activity and mechanism by in vivo and in vitro experiments to explore its application on hair health. METHODS: In the present study, we determined the effects of Gp on the expression of hair growth-related genes and proliferation of h

The importance of mitochondria in regulation of aging has been extensively recognized and confirmed. Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino, a homology of medicine and food, has been widely utilized as dietary supplement. In this study, the transcriptome of normal cells (wild type mouse embryo fibroblasts) regulated by the 30% aqueous EtOH extract of G. pentaphyllum was firstly evaluated by RNA sequencing and the results revealed that the G. pentaphyllum could up-regulate the genes involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and sirtuin (SIRT) signaling pathways, indicating its effect in p
