Protective Effects of Qingre Sanjie Jiaonang on Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Pilot Study.
BACKGROUND: Qingre Sanjie Jiaonang (QRSJ) is a single herbal preparation from Senecio scandens Buch.-Ham.ex D. Don which has been proved to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. QRSJ has been used in treating upper respiratory tract inflammation and acute bronchitis in China for nearly twenty years. PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the potential effects of QRSJ in alleviating pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and its mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN AND METHOD: A mouse model of PF was induced by intratracheal injection of Bleomycin (BLM, 5 mg/kg), followed by different doses of QRSJ administration

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Feining keli (FNKL) is herbal preparation mainly made from Senecio cannabifolius Less., In recent years, more and more studies have found that FNKL has excellent therapeutic effects on chronic bronchitis (CB). Nevertheless, its pharmacodynamic material basis and mechanism of action are still unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore the pharmacodynamic material basis and mechanism of action of FNKL in treating CB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CB rat model was induced using nasal drops of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in combination with smoking. Various as

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The aerial parts of Senecio scandens Buch.-Ham. (family Asteraceae) have a long history in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for various ailments, such as bacterial diarrhea, enteritis, conjunctivitis, and respiratory tract infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bibliographic investigation of Senecio scandens was accomplished by analyzing secondary sources, including the Chinese Medicinal plantal Classics, the Internet (Google Scholar and Baidu Scholar), and scientific databases accepted worldwide (Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciFinder, and CNKI). As important members of the terpenes family, sesquiterpenes represent a group of natural compounds with diverse skeletal types. Among them, the eremophilane-type sesquiterpenes, widely present in several genera (such as Ligularia, Senecio, Cacalia) of Asteraceae, account for a small number of natural compounds and form differently from other sesquiterpenes because they challenged the isoprene rule of biosynthesis. Due to the unique structural features and various functional groups, these compounds possess a number of biological activities such as anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammator
PubMed: 25138093Genus Senecio in China: A review on its traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicity.
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The genus Senecio comprises approximately 1500 species worldwide, with over 60 species distributed throughout China. These plants have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various conditions including inflammation, eye diseases, vaginal trichomoniasis, and acute urinary tract infections. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the geographical distribution, traditional uses, phytochemical composition, pharmacological activities, and toxicology of medicinally important Senecio species in China.
